Note for parents

Keep an eye on

Your child is running faster and climbing higher, which means falls are more dramatic. Keep a basic first aid kit handy. Imaginary fears are normal right now. Monsters under the bed, scary shadows, loud noises. Take their fears seriously, even when they seem silly to you. A quick "monster check" before bed goes a long way.

For you

They know their own name. First and last. They're becoming their own person, built on the foundation you gave them.

Caution

Running and falling risks

Toddlers are running faster but still developing coordination. Falls on hard surfaces, stairs, and uneven ground are common.

What to do

Ensure outdoor play areas have soft surfaces. Keep pathways clear of tripping hazards. Have toddler wear supportive shoes with non-slip soles.

Good to know

Imaginary fears

As imagination develops, toddlers may develop fears of the dark, monsters, loud noises, or unfamiliar situations.

What to do

Take fears seriously even if they seem irrational. Use a nightlight. Read books about overcoming fears. Avoid forcing child into scary situations. Offer comfort and reassurance.
