Note for parents

Keep an eye on

Nightmares can begin around this age. They're brief and your child won't remember them well, but they can be upsetting in the moment. Comfort and reassure. Driveways and garages are dangerous. Always know where your toddler is before moving a car, and never assume they'll stay put.

For you

The "why" phase can be exhausting. But every question means your child trusts you to explain the world. That trust is something you built.

Urgent

Driveway and garage safety

Toddlers are hard to see behind vehicles. Driveway backover accidents are a serious risk.

What to do

Always know where your toddler is before moving a vehicle. Walk around the car before backing up. Hold toddler's hand in driveways. Keep garage doors closed.

Good to know

Nightmares may begin

Some toddlers start having nightmares around this age. They may wake up crying and be scared of the dark or monsters.

What to do

Comfort and reassure your child. Use a nightlight if darkness is scary. Avoid scary content before bed. Maintain a calming bedtime routine.
