Note for parents

Keep an eye on

Running means running toward danger, like streets and parking lots. Hold hands near roads every single time, even if they protest. Sleep regression can hit around now, so if bedtime suddenly falls apart, stay consistent with your routine. It usually passes within a few weeks.

For you

The mess at mealtime when they try the spoon themselves? That's independence growing. Wipe the floor later. Right now, let them try.

Urgent

Running into danger

Newly mobile runners may dash toward streets, parking lots, or other dangerous areas without awareness of danger.

What to do

Hold hands in parking lots and near streets. Teach 'stop' as a safety command. Practice listening to 'freeze' and 'wait.' Never let toddler walk unattended near traffic.

Good to know

Sleep regression

Many toddlers experience a sleep regression around 18-21 months, with resistance to bedtime, night wakings, or early morning waking.

What to do

Maintain a consistent bedtime routine. Keep the same sleep schedule. Be patient; most regressions pass in 2-6 weeks. Avoid introducing new sleep crutches.
