Note for parents

Keep an eye on

Emotional outbursts are peaking around now. Full-body meltdowns in the grocery store are not a reflection of your parenting. Keep cleaning products, medications, and anything toxic locked up high. Toddlers are resourceful climbers, and poison control calls spike at this age.

For you

A grocery store meltdown feels like the whole world is watching. It's not. And the parents who are watching? They've been there. Every single one of them.

Urgent

Poisoning prevention

Curious toddlers can access cleaning products, medications, and plants. Poisoning is a leading cause of injury for children under 5.

What to do

Store all medications and cleaning products locked and out of reach. Keep Poison Control number saved: 1-800-222-1222. Know which houseplants are toxic.

Good to know

Emotional outbursts increasing

Peak tantrum age is typically 18-24 months. Toddler has big emotions and limited ability to regulate or communicate them.

What to do

Validate emotions: 'You're really angry right now.' Stay nearby but calm. Don't give in to demands made during tantrums. Teach simple emotion words.
