Note for parents

Keep an eye on

The kitchen is especially dangerous right now. Hot stove handles, boiling pots, and sharp objects are all within potential reach as climbing improves. Screen time for toddlers under 18 months should be minimal, mostly video calls with family. Their brains learn best from real-world interaction at this age.

For you

That moment when your toddler hugs a stuffed bear and pats its back? They learned that gentleness from you. You're doing more right than you realize.

Caution

Toddler-proofing the kitchen

Toddlers are increasingly mobile and curious. The kitchen contains hot surfaces, sharp objects, and chemicals within climbing reach.

What to do

Use stove knob covers and back burners. Turn pot handles inward. Store knives and chemicals up high. Keep toddler away from the stove when cooking.

Caution

Screen time limits

The AAP recommends avoiding screen time (except video chatting) for children under 18 months. Excessive screen time can affect language development.

What to do

Limit or avoid screen time. If using screens, watch together and talk about what you see. Prioritize interactive play, reading, and outdoor time.
