Note for parents

Keep an eye on

Picky eating often starts around now. Your toddler might refuse foods they loved last week. This is normal and not a battle worth fighting hard. They're also climbing on furniture more, so make sure bookshelves and dressers are secured to the wall. A tipped dresser is one of the most dangerous household hazards for toddlers.

For you

Toddlerhood is a whole new game. It's louder and messier, but those little arms reaching up for a hug make all of it worth it.

Urgent

Climbing furniture risks

Toddlers who can walk start climbing on everything. Bookshelves, dressers, and TVs are serious tip-over hazards.

What to do

Anchor all tall furniture and TVs to the wall. Remove items that encourage climbing near windows or on high surfaces.

Good to know

Picky eating may begin

Many toddlers become more selective about food around this age. Food jags (wanting only one food) and refusing previously accepted foods are common.

What to do

Continue offering a variety of foods without pressure. It can take 10-15 exposures before a child accepts a new food. Don't make separate meals.
